# Buddhism

Buddhism began with the teaching of the Buddha in northern India about 2,500 years ago. It holds that suffering has a cause and an end and describes a path to it. It has several schools, Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana among them, and ways of practice from silent sitting to chanting.
