Andean siku
The siku is the Andean panpipe. It is divided into two rows of pipes, called ira and arka, and each row is played by a different person. Neither row has all the notes, so the two players alternate to make one melody between them. Sikuri ensembles play the same melody on pipes of different sizes at the same time, often an octave apart, which gives a thick, breathy sound. Each pipe is closed at the bottom, so, like a clarinet, it sounds mostly the odd harmonics.
